Bangkok’s transportation system has entered the 21st century with modern, electric rail lines that are easing traffic and making travel around the capital city both comfortable and convenient.

Bangkok’s MRT underground Blue Line is the newest addition to the metropolitan rail system.  The Blue Line is a 21 km, 18 stop route with terminal stations at Bang Sue and Hua Lumphong, the primary train station for journeys from Bangkok to the countryside.

Accessing different neighborhoods than the BTS Skytrain, the MRT follows Rama IV and Ratchadaphisek Roads, both of which feature a number of tourist attractions, such as the Thailand Cultural Center.  However, in comparison to the more tourist-oriented districts of the BTS, the MRT destinations are still more practical for Thai commuters.

The MRT has interchange stations with the BTS skytrain at Mo Chit, near the northern bus terminal and the JJ Weekend Market, on Sukhumvit Road at Asoke station (BTS) and Sukhumvit station (MRT), and on Silom Road at Sala Daeng Station (BTS) and Silom Station (MRT).

Unlimited single day and various multi-day passes can be purchased for both the BTS and MRT, many of which are ideal for tourists wishing to explore the city, though such cards are not transferable between the two independently owned rail lines and must be purchased separately.
